What is this, you may be asking? It’s the cast made of Dawson’s leg. And with this cast, they will be making Dawson’s prosthesis!!
Wednesday morning Dawson had an 8am appointment to get his casts made. I was just going to take Wes to daycare and then head to D’s appointment, but I decided last minute to bring Wes along so he could see where Dawson spends a lot of his time.
Both of Dawson’s legs were casted. Before the casting was done, there was a lot of drawing on Dawson’s legs (or rather, on the derma fit on Dawson’s legs) to mark (I believe) where all of his bones are. Those are the purple marks that you see inside the casts.
Dawson and Wes provided a lot of entertainment as the casts were made. Those two are such hams when they are together. And Wes wanted in on the picture action, too, when I started snapping photos of D.
So when do the prosthesis come in? They will be in by December 9th. DECEMBER. NINTH. Right?!?!?
We have a two hour appointment that day. The prosthesis that come in that day will be a rough version, prototype for D’s legs. A first version, if you will? They will be able to use heat to modify the legs to make them fit better. These first ones will be to make sure we have exactly what Dawson needs.
This is super exciting. We now really need to get Dawson to where he is wearing his gel liners all day. D has good days and bad days when it comes to the gel liners. Sometimes he wears them for hours without complaint. Yesterday he wore them for two hours and complained the whole time. Baby steps.
The hope is that we get him into those gel liners more and more each day, so he’s wearing them all day very soon. It will also be good for the ends of his poor legs, which constantly have open sores at the bottom of them. He never complains, but he moves around SO much and the socks and derma fit that he wears doesn’t give him the protection that he needs.
If things go well, we are still set for an inpatient stay in January at the Children’s Hospital. Two to three weeks of intensive rehab to learn how to use the prosthesis. It will be here before we know it.
Yesterday was an awesome Thanksgiving. We have a lot to be thankful for each year, but this year we are especially thankful that we can attempt to take family pictures like these.
Clearly we should have just quit while we were ahead, since the best photos were the first ones.
